Saranam Ayyappa (1980) is a mythological drama by director Dasarathan. Features Boopathi, Raviraj, Rajakrishna, Jaybharathi and Vijayan. The film is about Aravind, a troubled young man who embarks on a challenging pilgrimage to the sacred shrine of Lord Ayyappa seeking peace and purpose. The experiences and expectations en route change him. However, to aptly describe this development would ultimately ruin the plot twist, his redemption arc, and his new call to action of service to others.
Aravind is a troubled young man who cannot stop thinking about the mistakes he made. He is heavy-hearted and discontented and therefore decides to go on a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala. On his journey to Sabarimala, he meets Meera, a faithful and kind woman who has experienced many trials in her life, yet continues to possess hope. As pilgrims travel, they must journey through forests and hills with many challenges along the way. As they walk, Aravind learns patience and kindness and the power of faith in those around him. At times, he wishes he could give up, but folks like Meera persuade him otherwise.
Through this process, Aravind's heart began to change, and he found that true happiness arises when you help others, having faith in something larger than himself. When he finally achieves it and arrives in Sabarimala, he feels a connection with Lord Ayyappa, praying with his whole being and ultimately discovering the desire to change his life. When Aravind arrives home, he commits himself to helping his family and community, and to acting honourably, as well as to doing good works. Aravind's story demonstrates that there is always hope awaiting others in faith to make a fresh start through determination.
Saranam Ayyappa is an authentic representation of faith and personal transformation, beautifully capturing the emotional journey of its subject. The performances are earnest, and the soulfulness of the film makes an impression on the viewer, inciting people to look at hope and strength within. The film is simple and peaceful, which suits its setting of a spiritual journey, with music to underscore a devotional experience and scenes of a travel pilgrimage that round out the story for those invested in a tale of courage and renewal.
