“The Priest” (2021) is a Malayalam supernatural horror mystery film written and directed by Jofin T. Chacko, featuring Mammootty, Nikhila Vimal, Baby Monica, and Manju Warrier in a significant extended cameo. Inspired by elements of the English series Father Brown and the American thriller The Prodigy, the movie is about a priest who explores a series of strange suicides that unravel into a larger web of mystery and horror.

Father Carmen Benedict (Mammooty), a parapsychologist and priest, is brought in on the case when Diya Alex contacts him in the case of the suicides within the wealthy Alatt family. The last of the Alatts to be alive, Elizabeth Alatt (Meera Nair), also commits suicide before she can be interviewed by Father Benedict. The only potential witness is Ameya Gabriel, a quiet 11-year-old orphan who had been staying with Elizabeth. The same evening, an attempt on Ameya's life is made, and foul play is suspected. Father Benedict digs further and learns that there is a conspiracy involving the Alatt Trust. Dr. Sanjay and his co-conspirators are arrested for fraud and brainwashing the victims to seize the family wealth.

When the mystery appears to be solved, there is a twist: Diya had passed away previously, and her ghost had been guiding Benedict. Ameya begins to display weird behaviour when schoolteacher Jessy Cherian (Nikhila) enters her life. While Jessy makes the girl perform well academically, Ameya turns violent against Jessy's fiancé, Siddharth. Father Benedict learns that Ameya is possessed by the ghost of Susan (Manju), Jessy's sister, who had died in a car accident at the hands of Siddharth.

In a dramatic exorcism, the truth is revealed: Jessy, and not Siddharth, was driving the car that caused Susan's death. Once Susan's wrathful spirit knows this, it leaves Ameya's body. The final twist arrives in the guise of the revelation that Susan could have lived if a doctor had not allowed her to die. Finally, justice is served by Father Benedict, and Susan's soul is finally able to rest.
