Directed by S. V. Ramanan, "Uruvangal Maralam" is a drama film released in 1983. It stars Y. G. Mahendran, Suhasini and K. A. Thangavelu. It’s about a religious man who meets God, who exposes him to some future events. The man subsequently attempts to caution everyone regarding these predictions, but nobody believes him.

Ramalingam is a strong believer in an endless God and worships all Gods, even newspaper clippings. He’s a banker whose eccentric convictions render him a laughingstock, even to his wife. One day, Ramalingam is contacted by God, who appears to him in the form of the legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan. At first, Ramalingam assumes it’s a joke when he’s inexplicably transported to the 18th floor of a 7-floor building. He starts believing. God tells him he has to warn them what’s coming.

Ramalingam starts warning people about future events, but no one believes him initially. Then his prophecies, like a train wreck, do come true, and people begin to hail him a mighty wizard. God visits Ramalingam as various iconic actors, directing him. When God threatens that Ramalingam’s son will be killed, Ramalingam is enraged but retains his belief. Ultimately, Ramalingam is apprehended for forecasting a train crash, perceived as a terrorist with insider intelligence. In court, God descends to demonstrate Ramalingam’s sanity and returns his son, elaborating upon why he seldom intervenes in human life henceforth.

"Uruvangal Maralam" is a clever little drama about faith and belief, and divine intervention in day-to-day life. The movie is a perfect mix of comedy and drama, capturing the tribulations of a faithful man whose remarkable journey tests everyone in his circle. With a compelling story and unforgettable acting, the film encourages us to consider the complexities of spirituality, and where to draw the line between belief and doubt. It lingers in your mind by asking how we humans deal with the mysterious.
