“Wolf” is a 2023 fantasy horror movie directed and written by Vinu Venkatesh. It stars Anasuya Bharadwaj, Raai Laxmi, and Prabhu Deva and is a remake of the Malayalam film of the same title. The film combines psychological suspense with supernatural themes, against the backdrop of an unplanned lockdown.

“Sanjay” goes to visit his fiancee, “Asha”, to surprise her but ends up upsetting her instead. Asha, who has already been having second thoughts about the relationship owing to Sanjay's temper and possessiveness, becomes even more worried when there is a COVID lockdown announced suddenly by the government. Since Sanjay cannot head back home, he is stuck spending the night with her, leading to tensions between them.

During the course of the night, there are weird noises upstairs that disturb them. Sanjay refuses to let go, much to Asha's dismay. He finds a man, Joe, in a locked room. Joe surprises Sanjay by telling him that he is Asha's lover and that they were going to run away together that night. This information causes a heated argument between the two men, with Joe saying he wants to take Asha to South Africa to live an adventurous life as a hunter.

With rising tensions, Joe confronts Sanjay to make him think about his dominating personality and ignorance. Asha too comes to recognize her own blunders in the way she dealt with their relationship. The night makes both of them rethink their emotions and come to the conclusion of speaking better and correcting their shortcomings together.

“Wolf” generates tension with its psychological drama, yet it's supernatural content remains underutilized. While the movie well develops tension, its climax drifts more toward a relationship drama than horror. The performances are excellent, yet the story would have explored more of its sinister premise to support the horror appeal.
