The veteran singer Rekha Bhardwaj has recently shared an insight about the late Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh. The late singer Jagjit Singh once constructively criticised Rekha Bhardwaj, whose distinct voice had earned incredible recognition. This criticism acted as a ‘wake-up call’ for her.
Rekha Bhardwaj Recalls Jagjit Singh’s Advice
In a conversation with News 18, the singer said, ‘I wasn’t upset in the usual sense. I was upset, very positively. It wasn’t about ego. It was more than I felt so small in that moment. Still, I had been troubling him for almost two years, but he was quite encouraging. However, I didn’t realise that I wasn’t doing enough of riyaaz(singing practice).
The singer also said that Jagjit Singh’s criticism helped her stay on track in her career. She said, ‘For me, it was like being struck with a Zen stick—a wake-up call. That particular comment from Jagjit ji was necessary. It filled the gaps that I had in my practice. He had never said anything negative about me, but his sayings truly motivated me to push myself. Such types of corrections can only be done by a person who truly admires you.’
Moreover, Jagjit Singh and Rekha Bhardwaj had sung the song ‘Teri Fariyad’ together.
