Vikram Gokhale’s raise to fame Despite being a NDA student Vikram Gokhale still had reservations about his acting capabilities which he gradually polished by observations. In an interview he claimed that he was initially a poor actor but when he started learning acting under Vijaya Mehta (famous Marathi and Hindi stage actor / director) he learned a lot but real experience came when he had the golden opportunity of doing the Marathi play Barrister under the direction of Vijaya Mehta. The play was a huge hit and Vijaya Mehta extracted the hidden talent in Vikram Gokhale. The play made Vikram Gokhale a star on Marathi stage. Later he did many more plays Katha, Kharach Sangayche Tar, Jawai Maaza Bhala etc. Soon Vikram Gokhale became a name to reckon on Marathi theatre and its fame opened doors in Marathi cinema. Vikram Gokhale brought respectability in acting in Marathi cinema Vikram Gokhale raised the standard of acting in Marathi films and brought respectability to actors. With his introduction in Marathi cinema, Marathi actors, who were not given their due both in terms of money and esteem, began getting more respect and money. Few of his hit films are Kalaat Naklaat, Savarkhed Ek Gaav , Lapandav, Anumati (for which he won National award), Natsamrat, Vazir, Aaghaat ( acted and directed), Dusari Goshta, Maherchi Sadi (biggest blockbuster), Siddhant etc. Besides Marathi cinema he has also worked in other regional cinema over 20 Gujarati, Kannada and Telugu films. Most of his films have won critical acclaim and enormous popularity over the decades. Despite talent Vikram Gokhale had to struggle a lot in Bollywood Vikram Gokhale proved his histrionics as a powerful actor in his first major role in Hindi film Yehi Hai Zindagi (1977). The film was produced by South’s legendary filmmaker B.Nagi Ready who had early produced the hit film Julie. In this film Vikram Gokhale was pitted against India’s greatest actor Sanjeev Kumar. People who have seen the film will still remember Vikram Gokhale’s excellent performance as the smiling Lord Krishna who tests his devotee Sanjeev Kumar, who always prays for becoming rich man. He grand’s his wish and makes him a rich man and then starts the ordeals that Sanjeev Kumar goes as a rich man. It is both hilarious and worth taking a lesson. The confrontation scenes of Sanjeev Kumar and Lord Krishna, played effectively by Vikram Gokhale were the highlight of the film. Despite the film being hit and Vikram Gokhale winning accolades for his acting, Vikram Gokhale had to wait for good roles. In the 90’s Vikram Gokhale made a great tuning with Amitabh Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan shared a great rapport with brilliant actor Pran, the two did many films including Zanjeer, Don, Kaalia, Sharaabi etc. However by 90’s Pran had turned old hence when Mukul Anand made Agneepath he roped in Vikram Gokhale in a key role as Commissioner M. S. Gaitonde. Vikram Gokhale gave a superb performance at par with Amitabh Bachchan’s equally commendable performance. The tuning of the two actors became talk of the town and the two worked in many films like Akayla (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992), Hum Kaun Hai (2004) etc. Vikram Gokhale created sensation on TV Vikram Gokhale first created sensation of Doordarshan (DD) with his super hit TV serial Udaan (1990 -91). His role of an inspiring father who inspires his daughter to become police inspector and fight village atrocity won him wide fame and he became a household name. Later he did many popular TV serials like Virrudh, Jeevan Saathi, Sanjivani, Alpviram, Singhasan Ya Sukhanno ya (Zee Marathi), Dwidhaataa, Agnihotra etc.
