She acted in the popular serial Kumkum Bhagya between 2014 and 2016 for which she earned the ITA Award for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In this show, she co-starred with Sriti Jha, Shabir Ahluwalia, Arjit Taneja and Supriya Shukla. Mrunal Thakur appeared in the episodes of the mystery thriller Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek- Arjun, in which she has essayed the role of a journalist named Sakshi Anand.
Mrunal then made her debut in a Hindi film with Love Sonia in 2018. She acted as the female lead in the commercially successful films Super 30 and Batla House, both released in 2018. When she had a decline in Hindi films, she started working in Telugu films. She gained popularity with the film Sita Ramam in 2022, Hi Nanna in 2023. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in Sita Ramam.

She did a guest appearance in Tuyul & Mbak Yul Reborn. Before retiring from television, she appeared in an Indonesian serial called Nadin, in a guest appearance as Tara.
Mrunal Thakur than made her film debut in the Marathi film Hello Nandan, and her next film was also a Marathi film, Vitti Dandu, both of which were 2014 releases. She played Rubi in the film Nandan, and later she essayed the role of Sandhya. Her other Marathi film was Suraiya, in which she plays the role of Dr Swapna.
In 2026, Mrunal started her work with her first Hindi Project, Love Sonia, which was shot in Kolkata. The film, released in 2018 after delays, featured her in the titular role as a village girl who brings to light the issues of global human trafficking. Mrunal to give full justice to the role, she had even stayed in the brothel to study the body language of the prostitutes. Though the film seemed to be well accepted, it was a failure at the box office.
In 2019, Mrunal made her Bollywood debut in the biographical drama film Super 30. She is the narrator of the story of the mathematician Anand Kumar, in the pivotal role played by Hrithik Roshan in the film . She is a classical dancer and Anand Kumar’s love interest in the film. It was a successful film that emerged as one of the top-grossing Hindi films of 2019.
In Batla House in the same year, she played the role of Nandita Kumar, wife to John Abraham, in Nikhil Advani’s ‘Batla House’, which is based on the 2008 Batla House encounter. The film grossed at Rs. 1.11 billion worldwide in its commercially successful venture.
In 2020, Mrunal Thakur appeared in the Netflix four-part anthology horror film called Ghost Stories. She appeared as Ira in Karan Johar’s segment. She also appeared in a music video alongside John Abraham in the video Gallan Goriya.
In 2021, Mrunal starred in the sports drama called Toofaan, which was directed by Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra alongside Farhan Akhtar, and the film premiered on Amazon on 16th July 2021. She also starred in action thriller Dhamaka with Kartik Aaryan and Amruta Subhash, a film released on Netflix which was directed by Ram Madhvani. She appeared in two music videos in the year 2021, Bad Boy X Bad Girl with Badshah and Aise Na Chhoro with Guru Randhawa.
In 2024 to date, Mrunal has acted in the sports drama Jersey, a remake of the 2019 Telugu film starring Shahid Kapoor.
Mrunal Thakur had five releases in 2023, and the last four were Hindi films, such as Gumraah, Aankh Micholi, which bombed at the box office. Lust Stories 2 and Pippa, the action-starrer war film with Ishan Khatter, were released digitally.
In 2024, Mrunal essayed the role of an entrepreneur, Indu, in the Telugu film, The Family Star, opposite Vijay Devarakonda. The film received negative reviews and was a flop. She then appeared in Pooja Meri Jaan alongside Huma Qureshi for Maddock Films.
