The film that had taken over the span of two and half years to complete and was shot in the rocky terrain in the Southern state of Karnataka in a place called Ramnagar.  The impact of Gabbar Singh as the villain had its effect even on the little children too. His presence on the screen was that energetic. Sholay was the first film that was also released in 3D.

Coming back to the story, the film is about two small time criminals who are best friends and have released from the jail.   Jay essayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Veeru is Dharmendra had saved the life of the Ex Police Chief, Thakur Baldev Singh essayed by Sanjeev Kumar who  hires them to nab a dacoit and criminal Gabbar Singh (played by Amjad Khan) and brings them to the village promising them additional Rs.20,000  besides the reward of Rs. 50,000 if they bring to him Gabbar Singh the Dacoit Chief.   In the village Basanti is Hema Malini who rides a housecart for living meets them and there is Radha essayed by Jaya Bachchan who is Thakur Baldev Singh’s widowed daughter-in-law.
