Ahimsa (1981) is a political drama under the direction of I. V. Sasi from Malayalam cinema. It features Sukumaran, Mammootty, Ratheesh, Poornima Jayaram and Menaka. The film is about a small Kerala village where a string of mysterious murders threatens to ignite communal tension. Vasu, a reformed former rebel, and Devan, the son of a landlord, must find the truth before the village spirals into violence.

In a small village in Kerala during the early 1980s, two communities, Hindus and Muslims, lived side by side. But peace is shattered when a greedy landlord, Kunjutty, secretly creates conflict between them to grab land and gain political power. Young Hindu and Muslim men, including Vasu, a passionate Muslim youth, and Devan, a landlord's son, are swept up in the dilemma and the escalating violence. Kunjutty's divisive tactics cause the loss of innocent lives. Vasu is vengeful and angry, while Devan finds himself troubled and uncertain. For the first time, Devan begins to see that the system they operate in is broken.

Simultaneously, Mohan, a journalist, learns about political leaders and landowners using religion as a means of separating people to make money. Two fearless women, Ani and Safiya, come together to start peace initiatives with people from their respective communities. They encourage people to come together to dialogue and peacefully protest. At the large gathering, Vasu shows up with a gun, but when Ani speaks. He lays down his arms, implores forgiveness. In the end, truth prevails over the arrested corrupt leaders and Vasu and Devan assist in rebuilding the village. The villages, once divided, now come together to establish peace instead of hatred. Proving that with a divided community, the most powerful means forward is ahimsa (non-violence).

Ahimsa offers a powerful portrayal of tension and transformation in a community on the brink. It captivates audiences with the emotional capacity of the film. Complex characters with a sharp critique of human values and in conflict with an environment rife with tension. It expertly walks the line between drama and reflection. If you want to see a movie that explores how understanding, and courage can act as the catalysts for breaking down fear and separation without sensational drama, then this is the movie for you!
