“Chachi 420” (1997) is a Bollywood comedy movie by Kamal Haasan. It was a remake of the Tamil 1996 film “Avvai Shanmughi.” The film tells the story of a devoted dad who, to spend more time with his young daughter following a painful divorce, disguises himself as a granny and takes a job as her live-in nanny, resulting in a hilarious, heartfelt adventure infused with love, laughter and plenty of secrets.

Janki Paswan and Jaiprakash are divorcing each other. Jaiprakash is a dance director from a different caste, and Janki is the daughter of Durgaprasad Bhardwaj, a conservative businessman. Despite Durgaprasad's wishes, they were married, but Janki left Jaiprakash because of difficulties. Once a week, Jaiprakash is permitted by the court to see their daughter, Bharti. However, he forfeits this privilege after trying to remove her from Durgaprasad's house.

Jaiprakash poses as 'Lakshmi Godbole' in order to obtain a position as a nanny in the Bhardwaj home and be nearer to Bharti. Initially, he finds it difficult to adapt. After rescuing Janki from a dangerous situation, he earns the village’s respect. While Janki’s father is set to get her remarried, this all changes when he witnesses Rohit’s cowardly act. Jaiprakash, as Lakshmi, helps uncover thefts by house staff and also introduces a friend as a new cook.

As Jaiprakash tries to get through this trickery, both Durgaprasad and Janki fall in love with ‘Lakshmi.’ Misunderstandings ensue. Later on, Janki finds out the real story and reunites with Jaiprakash. They create an elaborate narrative surrounding Lakshmi’s death and remarry, with instructions to keep the truth hidden from everyone.

“Chachi 420” is a charming mix of comedy, emotion, and drama as we see a father’s futile but ultimately adorable attempt to remain in contact with his daughter following a divorce. Through creative costuming, comedic misdirection, and emotional beats, the film’s comedy underpins the true heart of the story. Its strong emotional core and engaging storytelling, make it a memorable tale of love, family, and the lengths one will go for a child.
