Rahul, played by Shahrukh Khan has been brought up by his grandparents since the age of 8 years in Mumbai. Just before his gradfather’s 100th birthday he decides to take a trip with his friends to Goa, but sadly his grandfather passes away and his grandmother asks him to immerse his ashes partly in Ganga and partly in Rameshwaram. He reluctantly agrees. Rahul, along with his friends Bobby and Baman, decide to dump the ashes in Goa. His grandmother however, asks him to travel by train.
He boards the Chennai Express and helps a girl get on the moving train along with four other men. She later explains to Rahul by singing that the four men are trying to kidnap her and she needs help. Seeing the men carrying weapons, Rahul isn’t able to do much. He later learns the four men and her cousins and her name is Meenamma, played by Deepika Padukone, whose marriage is forced to a local goon, Tangaballi, by her powerful mafia head father Durgeshwara.
Meenamma takes Rahul to her village and tells everyone he’s her lover. An agitated Tangaballi challenges him to a fight, which Rahul unknowingly accepts due to his inability to understand Tamil. On the night of the fight, Rahul escapes but somehow again lands up in the village. Later the two of them escape and come to the village of Vidhamba and tell the villagers they are a married couple. Meanwhile they immerse Rahul’s grandfather’s ashes and meet Durgeshwaram and tell him about their love for each other. He fights Tangaballi this time and wins and eventually get married.
