Anand, played by Salman Khan is brought into a mental asylum, which is run by Dr. Khurana, played by Om Puri and Dr. Sunil, played by Jackie Shroff and Dr. Tanvi, played by Kareena Kapoor. Anand is brought in by his brother to be admitted immediately due to a court order, but the doctors decide to evaluate him. They ask him several questions and he gives very normal answers, thus not giving any reason to the doctors to admit him. However when Anand sees a housefly he tries to get hold of it and later gets violent by trying to hit it. Doctors then realize he is not normal and admit him.
Tanvi finds out about Anand’s disturbing past, where he was a musician in college and in love with a nun called Maya, played by Rimi Sen. She does not reciprocate his advances to which Anand threatens to kill himself. Later Maya too confesses his love to him and they both decide to get married. Maya however has a habit of playing pranks on Anand like saying she cannot ride a horse, when she really can, etc. Anand does exactly the same one day and throws her into a swimming pool when she says she cannot swim. But unfortunately she was telling the truth as a result of which she drowns to her death. The incident traumatizes Anand and affects his mental health.
Tanvi feels sorry for Anand and decides to work on him with extra love and care.
Tanvi and Anand become good friends and Tanvi finds herself falling in love with him. She is however already engaged to Karan, played by Suniel Shetty. Karan lets Tanvi be with Anand and helps them out. However her father opposes and when Anand throws a violent tantrum, Mr. Khurana decides to do lobotomize him. As a result Karan decides to kill Anand by suffocation. This traumatizes Tanvi and she is admitted to the asylum.
The movie is directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Sunil Manchanda. The music is composed by Himesh Reshammiya and S.P Venkatesh. The cinematography is by Tirru.
