“Master” (2021) is an Indian action thriller film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. It is produced by S. Xavier Britto under the banner XB Film Creators. Vijay features in the lead role, and Vijay Sethupathi appears as the antagonist, with Malavika Mohanan and Arjun Das featuring in important roles. The movie is about J.D. (Vijay), a college instructor who is an alcoholic and is much favoured by students but not by teachers because of his carefree nature. When a school election goes haywire, J.D. is sent away on a three-month stay at a juvenile correctional facility, unaware that he is walking into a killing trap.
Parallelly, Bhavani (Vijay Sethupati), a 17-year-old boy in 2002, sees his family brutally killed by political opponents. Wrongly jailed in a juvenile centre, he suffers violence and becomes a ruthless gangster over the years. By 2019, Bhavani rules illegal operations by controlling young prisoners at the correctional centre, keeping his criminal empire out of sight.
In the centre, J.D. is initially untouched by events but gains an awareness of the horrific scale of Bhavani's grip when two brothers, Sabari and Manikandan, are murdered for trying to discover the truth. J.D. is unfairly suspected and takes action to exact revenge. Allied with staff member Charu (Malavika Mohanan) and loyal prisoners, he dismantles Bhavani's racket. In a violent showdown, J.D. eventually murders Bhavani, releasing the children from the grip of the gangster. J.D. gives himself up willingly, and the changes are brought about within the institution, giving a second lease of life to the children.
“Master” is an engrossing commercial thriller with intense performances and quotable altercations between Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi. While the film sustains action, emotion, and mass appeal in excellent ratios, some critics felt that it stretched too long and diluted its impact. Nevertheless, it stands tall due to its lean narrative, high-energy quotient, and youth-rehabilitation angle that is highly relevant in today's times.
