“Moondram Pirai” (1982) is a romantic film under the direction of Balu Mahendra. It has Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, Y. G. Mahendran and Silk Smitha. The film follows a young woman who, after a severe head injury from a car accident, begins to behave like a child. Trapped in a brothel, her life takes a turn when a kind-hearted school teacher discovers her and decides to help her find a way to heal and escape.

Bhagyalakshmi, a young woman, has a severe car accident and suffers from retrograde amnesia, failing to recognise her parents and mentally regressing to a childlike state. While in the hospital, she is kidnapped and sold to a brothel where she is renamed Vijaya. R. Srinivas, called Cheenu, visits the brothel with a friend and realises that she is still mentally a child. He learns about her background, and feelings of pity arise. Cheenu pays the madam to take Vijaya with him on a trip to Ketti, where he works as a school teacher. He takes care of her, and they develop a close bond, although their relationship faces challenges, including a near assault by a local woodcutter.

Meanwhile, Vijaya’s father, Vedachalam, searches for her and places an advertisement in the newspaper. A fellow traveller shares information that leads Cheenu to take Vijaya for treatment to regain her memories. After successful treatment, she remembers nothing from the time of her abduction. Cheenu's responsible and caring personality is appreciated by Vedachalam, and Vedachalam respectfully withdraws his police complaint. As they prepare to depart for Madras, Cheenu attempts to catch Vijaya's eyes one last time but eludes him unsuccessfully. She does not recognise him at all, which leaves Cheenu full of heartbreak, as he walks away.

"Moondram Pirai" is a highly emotional romantic drama that deals with the topics of memory, love and loss delicately and poignantly. It is one of the film's strengths in its sensitive storytelling, affecting imagery, and its actors' emotionalising the audience. The film provides rich emotional experiences with a strong sense of innocence and heartbreak, as it describes an emotional voyage taken by two different accidental characters by destiny, which is always told in an affecting way. Thus, the film is memorable and may be seen as eternal.
