Apu, played by Ria Shukla doesn’t enjoy studying or her grades are poor. She only dreams of having fun and spending time with her friends gossiping and killing time. Her friends on the other hand are doing well in their studies but Apu struggles a lot. She lives with her single mother Chanda, played by Swara Bhaskar who does four odd jobs to support them.
She is disturbed by Apu’s bad performance and attitude in school and takes advice from one of her employers, Dr Diwan, played by Ratna Pathak. She advices her to enroll her in math tuition but to get a concession on fees Apu must clear her pre-board exam. She thinks its almost impossible to achieve this and she may also end up doing odd jobs like her mother with a bleak future.
Chanda enrolls in Apu’s school without her knowledge to study maths and tutor her, herself. Seeing her in school enrages Apu and she tells her mother if she if scores better than her, she will have to quit school and her mother accepts her condition. Apu indeed manages to score higher and Chanda is forced to drop out of school. Chanda starts working in a restaurant after having lost one job dur to long hours at the school.
Seeing her mother struggle, Apu realizes her mistake and apologises to her and they both complete their SSC together. Apu goes on to apply for IAS after a few years and says her mother is her biggest inspiration in life.
