"Pokkiri" (2007) Directed by Prabhu Deva Starring Vijay, Asin, and Prakash Raj, punchlines that will get a toddler to laugh. The story centres around Tamizh, a remorseless gangster who kills for hire, willing to murder without caring if the hit is even legal. Yet who he actually is and what his true motives are become clear only after some pretty pulpy plot turns.
In Chennai, or Tamil Nadu, land mafia gangs were used to intimidate builders and citizens alike. From Dubai, Ali Bhai controls one of the largest gangs by communicating through his lieutenants, Guru and Logu, while another gang is controlled by Narasimhan. In the midst of this turmoil, newly appointed Police Commissioner Maideen Khan is determined to restore law and order. Tamizh was originally a feared street thug, operating solo and only interested in joining a gang when they could offer the most cash. He quickly begins to fall for Shruthi, an adorable aerobics instructor. While Shruthi falls in love with the charming, roguish Veer, she hates his violent way of life. At the same time, she’s being harassed by a corrupt cop, Govindan, who tries to marry her against her will. Tamizh, having rescued her three times, soon finds himself getting closer to her.
Ali Bhai’s gang hatches multiple attacks; the equation changes completely when Guru gets shot dead. Ali Bhai comes down to Chennai seeking vengeance and decides to try and kill a minister. Tamizh, who has now earned the gang’s trust, in secret sabotages this mission. The police fortunately arrest Ali Bhai, but his gang kidnaps Maideen’s daughter to advocate for his release. Created for the sole purpose of infiltrating Ali Bhai’s gang, during the course of the rescue mission, it is revealed that Tamizh is none other than Satyamoorthy, the undercover IPS officer. After a dramatic final fight, Satyamoorthy triumphs over Ali Bhai and Govindan, ensuring peace and justice return to the city.
Rivalry and Revenge "Pokkiri" balances intense action, romance, and melodrama beautifully. Vijay gives a real tour de force of a performance, making it all look so easy while swinging between mass appeal and emotional sincerity. With its unexpected twist, breakneck plot, and sleekly choreographed melee, the movie never lets you look away.
