Shahid Azmi, played by Rajkummar Rao is deeply disturbed by the Mumbai riots where he and his family witness hundreds of Muslims being killed. He later goes to a training camp in Kashmir but returns soon after seeing an execution. Shahid later gets falsely accused of terrorism by the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and gets 7 years sentencing in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. His brother tries to bail him out but to no avail.
He is inspired by one of the inmates called Ghulam Navi to study law after being acquitted in Mumbai. After completing his studies and getting a law degree, Shahid works with laywer Maqbool Memon and later starts working as an independent lawyer with his brother’s financial help. Later he helps several muslims in POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Acts) cases.
Shahid’s first win as a defense lawyer comes when he helps Arif Panwala get acquittal for the Mumbai bus bombings. Similarly, he represents the accused in the Mumbai Train bombings and Malegaon bombings. People start accusing Shahid of defending terrorists, make threatening calls to him and his family. At one juncture few assailants paint his face black outside a courtroom. He is eventually shot dead in his office and dies on the spot.
The movie is directed by Hansal Mehta and produced by Anurag Kashyap, Sunil Bohra, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The music is composed by Karan Kulkarni.
