"Sivakasi" is a 2005 Tamil action drama film directed by Perarasu, starring Vijay, Asin, and Prakash Raj. Our fictional story chronicles the journey of Muthappa, who fled his homeland as a young boy after being falsely accused of his brother’s criminal act. Years later, he comes back reincarnated as Sivakasi and faces off with his own criminal half-brother Udayappa to restore order to the world.

Chennai welder Sivakasi’s romance with Hema hits a wall when her family refuses to accept him because his background is not worthy of their daughter. When Hema challenges him about his background, Sivakasi’s true identity as Muthappa is unveiled, who had eloped from home after being accused of a fire accident that was in fact caused by his sibling Udayappa. Hema gives him an ultimatum to mend his broken ties with his family before their own arranged marriage. Back at home, Sivakasi discovers that his brother Udayappa has become an MLA with the strong political backing of his wicked mother-in-law Moolimungari, while his own mother Thangam and sister Vairam languish in abject poverty. Through some clever mind games, Sivakasi anonymously supports his family, foils Udayappa’s property transaction, and forces him to reveal his criminal activities. Vairam, with Sivakasi’s backing, runs against Udayappa in the local elections and wins sympathy after Udayappa beats her up during a violent exchange.

Sivakasi has had the last laugh on Udayappa, further undermining him by orchestrating phoney threats, then whipping public sentiment against Udayappa. Udayappa’s plans to eliminate his wife and frame Sivakasi fall through, and Sivakasi stages a fake murder to blackmail Udayappa into surrendering his estate. With the property and elections won, Sivakasi finally shows his true character as Muthappa to his mother and sister. When at the crux of the third act, Moolimungari sends henchmen after Udayappa; Thangam pleads with Sivakasi to spare her young son’s life. Udayappa comes to his senses, understands his wrongdoings and begs for forgiveness. The reconciliation that takes place at the end of the film, with Muthappa marrying Hema and reuniting his family, is an important aspect of the classic Masala movie.

Essential and inspiring, "Sivakasi" is a crowd-pleasing action drama with stunning emotional depth and electric, vivacious performances. The revenge and redemption may not play out the way you were expecting, but the film’s ending is a potent cocktail of all three themes, a feast of familial love and sacrifice.
