In 1825, British occupied India, a bunch of men who call themselves the Thuggees or the Deceivers are killing people in ritualistic fashion and also committing murders. The district administrator William Savage wants those men to be caught and brought to justice. He thus calls for a man hunt and manages to nab a man called Hussein. This doesn’t auger well with William’s father-in-law and he dismisses his report. Soon William infiltrates into the Thuggees gang as a poor native and calls himself Gopal the weaver. They accept him and he gets all the training. Gopal however, never kills anyone himself.

Hussein one day informs William’s wife Sarah of what is happening and the Thuggees group overhear him and ask William to kill him. However he tries to escape with Hussein but the latter is shot dead. The East India Company arrives just in time and captures and kills the Thuggees thus eradicating this cult in India. The film is directed by Nicholas Meyer and produced by Ismail Merchant. The music is composed by John Scott. The star cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Saeed Jaffrey and Shashi Kapoor.
