“Vaaranam Aayiram” (2008) by Gautam Vasudev Menon Vaaranam Aayiram is an action-drama film. Also featuring Simran, Sameera Reddy and Ramya in important roles, it stars Suriya in dual characters as father and son. The plot centres on Major Suriya and his recollections of his father’s wisdom and experiences as the son finds himself on a fateful rescue mission.

The film begins with Krishnan, the father, collapsing at home and dying from a heart attack. His son, Major Suriya, on a mission in Kashmir for the Indian army, is about to receive the news. This immediately provokes a series of flashbacks in which Suriya recollects his father’s life, starting from Krishnan’s early fascination with Malini, their wedding and how he brought up his kids along with affection and companionship. Suriya has always looked up to his father, and he is determined to always make him proud, and after falling in love with Meghna, he has pursued her after she moves to California. Krishnan’s smoking-related heart attack has a profound impact on Suriya, who matures into a more responsible young adult, providing for his family through music and a small design firm.

Suriya follows Meghna to the United States, where she agrees to his advances, but she is unfortunately killed in a bombing. Heartbroken, he returns to India and spirals into depression and drug addiction. Inspired by an admirer, he finds his internal might and rescues a kidnapped child in Kashmir, making him a national hero. He enlists in the Indian Army, gets married to Priya, and has a family. At the same time, Krishnan is himself being diagnosed with throat cancer. Having accomplished his military task, Suriya must say goodbye to his father, setting him at rest with his mother and elder sister, completing his own journey toward inner calm.

“Vaaranam Aayiram” is about the wonderful bond we’ve always known existed between a father and son. Whether it is Kumar or Aruva, Suriya delivers an outstanding performance in both roles, capturing the journey of love, loss, and purpose. The film’s emotional depth, soulful music, and real-life reflections make it a memorable and inspiring watch.
