Already being called a crowdfunded and state-subsidised landmark, the very first glimpse of celebrated Marathi performer Subodh Bhave as iconic saint-poet ‘Sant Tukaram’ has been ceremoniously released, sending canisters of jubilation into the audiences and cinephiles. Bhave and his impressive acting chops and commitment to the character are well-known, though he comes close to looking unrecognisable here, inhabiting the spiritual avatar of the 17th-century Varkari saint.

Subodh Bhave’s Sant Tukaram Avatar Revealed

Directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni, the crowd-funded feature film is the first to attempt to dramatise the life and lessons of Sant Tukaram, whose abhangas (devotional poetry) are still recited by millions across India. The metamorphosis of Bhave, with her period costume, peaceful demeanour and old-world milieu, has been widely lauded for its authenticity and profundity.

While speaking at the event unveiling the project, Subodh Bhave said he couldn’t imagine having been given a greater opportunity for gratitude. The role of Sant Tukaram is not just a role; it’s a spiritual journey. I certainly hope to do justice to his timeless legacy,” he added.

The documentary is currently in post-production, with a planned release for later this year. It looks like shaping up to be a visual, emotional tribute to one of Maharashtra’s most beloved saints. Fans and film critics measure their expectations, hoping this characterisation will become one of Subodh Bhave’s most memorable performances so far.
