A timeless classic of Indian cinema, Bimal Roy’s 1953 film Do Bigha Zamin is all set to return to the international stage. The iconic film will be screened at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which will run from August 27 to September 6, 2025.

The screening will coincide with the legendary filmmaker’s 116th birth anniversary, marking a moment of pride and remembrance for Indian cinema.

Classic 1953 Film Returns To Global Stage

Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s poem Dui Bigha Zamin, the film tells the story of post-independence India through the eyes of a poor farmer fighting to save his land. With its neorealist style and powerful human themes, Do Bigha Zamin broke cinematic ground when it was released and won the Filmfare Award for Best Film, along with international acclaim including a Prix International at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival.

The Venice screening honors Bimal Roy’s artistic legacy and the film’s historical importance. Roy, considered one of Indian cinema’s greatest directors, also helmed classics like Devdas, Madhumati, Sujata, and Bandini. His work blended social realism with emotional depth, influencing generations of filmmakers.

It’s also noteworthy that acclaimed director Ritwik Ghatak was closely associated with Bimal Roy’s creative circle in Mumbai. Roy's mentorship helped shape the future of Indian parallel cinema.

With Do Bigha Zamin set to shine again on an international platform, this moment stands as a tribute not just to a film, but to the storytelling legacy of Bimal Roy and the enduring voice of Indian cinema.
