Actor Chiranjeet Chakraborty was recently honoured with the Best Actor award at the Calgary Bengali Film Festival in Canada for his performance in the upcoming film Hema Malini. Directed by Parmita Munshi, the film features Chiranjeet in a character modeled after Bollywood legend Dharmendra.
Along with his award, the film also won Best Story and Screenplay for Munshi, and a Special Jury Mention for actress Chaiti Ghoshal. The film is set to hit theatres this August.
The story of Hema Malini was widely appreciated by both Bengali and non-Bengali audiences at the festival. The narrative explores the theme of identity and aspiration. Director Parmita Munshi clarified that ‘Hema Malini’ is not a character but a symbolic reference drawn from the Rigveda’s Sri Suktam, where Goddess Lakshmi is referred to as Subarna Hema Malini. She described the film as a story of transition and chasing what one wants to become, even if success isn’t guaranteed.
Speaking on the recognition, Chiranjeet said receiving awards increases his hunger to work harder. Chiranjeet Chakraborty shared that portraying a Dharmendra-inspired character and being recognized abroad made him feel proud. Meanwhile, Chaiti Ghoshal, who had a brief yet important role, expressed surprise and gratitude on receiving the Special Jury Award.
