Konkona Sen Sharma

Film debut and rise to prominence ( 2000-2002) After making her film debut as a child artist in the 1983 Bengali film Indra, Konkona Sen went on to make her actual lead debut in the Bengali production Ek Je Aachhe Kanya opposite Sabyasachi Chakrabarty in 2001. The movie panned out to be a great platform for her to base her film career on, ironically making starting off in a character with dark shades. Her next film was with acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh in his emotional drama Titli . The movie saw her pairing with Mithun Chakraborty and her mother Aparna Sen. Konkona Sen was widely applauded for her fierce interpretation of the various psychological intricacies of the troubled teenager finding it hard to grow up. Major career break and ensuing releases ( 2002- 2006) Konkona Sen made a strong thumping point with her mother Aparna Sen’s English directorial drama film Mr. and Mrs. Iyer which had her along with Rahul Bose, as the title characters. The movie which narrated the story of two strangers who embark on a bus journey tighter after a series of events, one being a Tamil Iyer Brahmin girl and other being Bengali Muslim amidst a communal strike in India. The movie emerged with stunning reviews and had screenings at many prestigious film festivals across the world along with a decent box office collection. Konkona Sen swept away many Awards like the National Film Award for Best Actress and many others. She then went on to be part of three more English production throufh Chai Pani Etc, Amu, Page 3 and 15 Park Avenue all of which made her a big name in Bollywood too. The year 2006 saw her reuniting with Rituparno Ghosh for the Bengali drama film Dosar, which had her playing a wife who is left behind to face a fatal relationship revelation after her husband faces an accident. The National Film Award winning movie made her a bankable actress with International recognition bestowed on her like the Best Actress Award at New York Film Festival and many more. She then went on to play meaty roles in critically acclaimed movies like Rajat Kapoor’s Mixed Doubles and Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara Hindi retelling of Shakespeare’s Othello, which had her pairing with an ensemble cast consisting of Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor and many more in the lead. Konkona Sen was seen reprising the character “Emilia”, and got her highly acclaimed reviews. Array of releases ( 2007- 2013) After three back to back under performers in Deadline: Sirf 24 Ghante , Traffic Signal and Meridian, she went on to play a important role in Anurag Basu’s critically acclaimed musical drama Life In A Metro along with Dharmendra, Nafisa Ali, Irrfan Khan, Sharman Joshi and many more. The same year she played among the lead in the emotional drama Laaga Chunari Mein Daag opposite Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Kunal Kapoor. After a special appearance in the highly acclaimed in Fashion Movie where she played herself, she went on to be the part of the post marital drama Dil Kabaddi and the English horror anthology flick 8 in 2008. konkona Sen was then selected to play one among the six contestants selected to meet the visiting US President representing India in the acclaimed satirical drama film The President Is Coming. Zoya Akhtar’s rags to riches drama had her pairing with Farhan Akhtar in the lead playing a struggling actress on the lookout for a major break , who gets tangled in a relationship with a newly moved in “wannabe star” actor. The movie was a great hit among critics and was a revelation for the actress. She continued her good run in 2009 with Ayan Mukherjee’s coming of age flick Wake Up Sid where she played the main driving force in changing the lifestyle and outlook of the irresponsible protagonist played by Ranbir Kapoor. The movie was a yet unexplored area for Sen and she was seen coming up with a bravo performance.
