Biography

Manav started the theatre group named Aranya in 20p04 . He was highly influenced by Charles Bukowski, Vinod Kumar Shukla and Nirmal  Verma ,  whose names he mentioned while honoring at the Red Sparrow Play in 2010. He has written and directed 13 plays so far .In 2004,  Kaul staged the Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, a dramatic monologue in Hindi about small town.


In 2004, Manav staged Shakkar ke Paanch Daane a monologue in Hindi . He also enacted in the play Peele Scooter Wala Aadmi Kaul exploring the relationship of father and son .  It won him the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for the best script in the year 2005. In 2009 Manav performed in English which as a stage hit.

In 2006 Kaul staged a bitter sweet meditation on old age by the name of Bali Aur Shambhu featuring Mishra and Sudhir Pandey.  The idea was to show the audience that people in old age homes also have lot of fun. He did several plays before he joined the main stream cinema.


In 2012,  Manav Kaul did his debut entry with the film Hansa as a film director for which he also did the screenplay. His debut as an actor was with the fantasy film Jajantaram Mamantaram in 2003 and then was a part of the Hindi drama film Kai Po Che in 2013.


In 2017 he got his big break in a supporting role in the film Tumhari Sulu in which he enacted the role of Vidya Balan’s husband. His role was much appreciated and he got nominated for the Best Supporting Actor . In 2021 he also acted in the film Saina.


Manav Kaul has appeared in many movies, including Thappad, Nail Polish, Tumhari Sulu, Kai Po Che!, and City Lights. He has also worked as a director, playwright, author, and filmmaker.  He was a part of  the film Thappad release in 2020, Nail Polish in the same year, Dobaara in 2018, Badla a thriller released in 2018, Wazir a crime musical thriller released in 2014 and 1971, a war drama film released in 2003.


Manav has also two Netflix films to his credit, namely.. Ajeeb Dastaan and Madam Chief Minister.

Besides an actor, he is also a writer for themes on isolation , nostalgia or rootlessness . Some of his books that are popular are Chalta Phirta Pret, Antima , Bahut Door Kitna Door Hota Hai , Theek Tumhare Peeche.  Kaul’s most recent published novel is Rooh which explores the journey of his lost motherland Kashmir.
