Violet is an Anglo-Indian teacher living a quiet and lonely life at 36 Chowringhee Lane in Kolkata. She has only a pet cat for company that she spends time petting and sometimes talking to. One day during Christmas, she runs into her ex-student Nandita and her boyfriend Samaresh and is delighted to see them. She chats with them for a bit and then invites them over for coffee. They reluctantly agree. When they come home, they realize that Violet lives alone and her apartment would be a perfect place for their private time together. So Samaresh requests her to use their apartment while she is away at work  and Violet agrees. Violet gets close to Nandita and her fiancé and enjoys their company once back from work. Slowly as time passes by, Nandita and Samaresh get married and move on with their lives. Violet however misses their presence.
