“Deiva Thirumagal” (2011) This Tamil-language melodrama from director A. L. Vijay has emotional complexity and superb performances. Features Vikram, Sara Arjun, Anushka Shetty, and Amala Paul. The film follows the inspiring journey of Krishna, an intellectually disabled man, as he engages in a courtroom battle to regain custody of his cherished daughter, Nila.

Krishna now lives with his friend Victor, a master chocolatier, on an estate in the hill town of Avalanchi. Despite his mental disability, he raises his daughter Nila with boundless love after her mother passes away during childbirth. Nila matures into a happy and brilliant child (in no small part due to Shwetha’s influence), quickly entering school and developing a strong connection with her teacher, Shwetha. Shwetha, who is Krishna’s late wife’s sister, understands their relationship and thinks Nila is in danger with him. Her father Rajendran’s arrival is impactful, presenting as entirely on Krishna’s side but turning out to be a snake, cutting Krishna off from Nila. While getting lost in the city, Krishna lands in a court, where he meets with a lawyer, Anuradha (played by Kirti Kulhari), who initially refuses, but after listening to the whole truth from Victor, she agrees to fight his case.

Anu then files a case to get Nila returned to her from Rajendran, who employs the best lawyer, Bhashyam. Over the course of the hearing, Krishna can’t convince anyone that he knows how to raise Nila. The unique connection between father and daughter is revealed, and Bhashyam, touched by their love, drops the case. Though Krishna wins custody, he eventually returns Nila to Shwetha for a better life ahead in her custody. He slinks back to his modest existence and career running the chocolate factory, content in the knowledge that he did right by her.

“Deiva Thirumagal” is a poignant and touching Kollywood film that challenges our understanding of love, sacrifice, and parenting. Vikram’s performance as Krishna is undoubtedly the heart of the film. The film’s greatest asset is its innocence and simplicity, buoyed by a haunting score and a warm, earnest young cast. It includes the viewer with both tears and a vision of hope.
