Ramprasad Sharma, played by Amol Palekar is a hardworking guy qualified to be a CA but is employed and looking for employment. His friend Dr Kedar recommends applying at a place called Urmila Traders, belonging to Bhavani Shankar, played by Utpal Dutt. Bhavani Shankar doesn’t like the youth who enjoy sports, wear modern attire or without a moustache. So Ramprasad, who already has a moustache wears traditional Indian clothes from his friend actor Deven Verma and also meets actor Amitabh Bachchan after his shooting at Mohan studio. He gets hired due to claiming to not like sports and being simple and traditional.

 

One day Ramprasad lies to Bhavani saying his mother is ill and goes to watch a football match. Bhavani spots him there. So next day Ramprasad explains the man he saw was his twin Laxmanprasad aka Lucky without a moustache. Bhavani feels guilty at his mistake and apologizes. He then hires his twin Lucky to teach his daughter Urmila, played by Bindiya Goswami, music. Ramprasad is forced to shave off his moustache and teach Urmila music. The two fall in love. Ram tells Urmila the truth and she urges him to tell her father the truth as well.

 

Just when Ram is about to tell Bhavani the truth, his fake moustache comes off. Bhavani thinks Lucky has murdered Ram so he goes to report it to the police but instead gets jailed himself for a mistaken identity by the cops. Eventually, Ram and Urmila are married and Bhavani is told the truth. Furious at being lied, at first he refuses to give his blessings but later accepts and agrees. The movie is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by N.C Sippy. The music is composed by R.D Burman.
