The story is about Raju the freelance guide portrayed by Dev Anand and Rosie( Waheeda Rehman)  the pretty young wife of an ageing archaeologist Marco ( Kishore Sahu)  . Rosie is the daughter of a courtesan.  Marco who wants to do some research on caves outside the city hires Raju to be their guide. While he goes into the cave to do his research and explore on his interests , Raju is forced to take care of Rosie and take her around the city as her guide.  While doing so he learns about her background and her passion for dancing which she has given up after marrying Marco who is against her dancing.   Rosie once tries to commit suicide upon learning that her husband Marco is having an affair inside the caves with a tribal girl.  However, Raju the guide calms her down . She finally bids goodbye and parts way with Marco and is now a responsibility of Raju’s. His community does not accept Rosie as she is considered as a prostitute being a courtesan’s daughter. His friends and family disown him but Raju helps Rosie embark on her singing and dancing career. Very soon Rosie becomes a star.

Marco learns of her success and wants to return to her but Raju kind of stops him with some forgery when he wants Rosie to release some of the jewels, Raju interferes resulting in Rosie getting to know of it and misunderstanding him which lands him in the jail for the forgery. Actually Raju is trying to keep Rosie away from the wrong doings of Marco.  Rosie also disrespects Raju who was her support but looks down upon him and doesn’t acknowledge his love.
