Inspector Surjan Singh, played by Aamir Khan is assigned a case where popular film actor Armaan Kapoor has had a mysterious accident and his car dives into the sea, killing him. Surjan along with his assistant Devrath, played by Rajkummar Rao are investigating the circumstances in which the actor’s car swirled into the sea. Meanwhile, Surjan is also fighting his personal demons, where a few years back his 8 years old son dies after drowning in a freak boat accident, he somehow blames himself for it and hasn’t ever gotten over it.

During Armaan Kapoor’s death investigation, the cops learn that he had Rs 2 million cash in his car that have now gone missing. He has given the money to a pimp Shashi who is blackmailing him for a cover-up he did for him and his friend Sanjay. Later Sanjay gets fed-up of his blackmailing and gets him killed but Shashi’s friend Tehmur steals his phone card and begins blackmailing him instead.

Surjan’s wife Roshni, played by Rani Mukerji finds solace talking to neighboring lady who claims to be a medium and passes on messages of their dead son to her. Surjan however does not believe in it and gets angry when he comes to know that Roshni has been talking to her. Meanwhile, Surjan meets a prostitute called Rosy who claims to know Armaan and his friends and takes him to hotel Lido. She tells him that she was picked up by Armaan and his friends three years ago that’s how she knows them. Later Tehmur also is killed by Sanjay’s thugs.

The cops then find out about Sanjay’s involvement and arrest him. He confesses that three years back Armaan, Nikhil and him had picked up an escort girl and were driving around with Nikhil and her in the backseat. Accidentally the car door opens and they both fall out getting badly injured. Nikhil is rushed to the hospital but the girl is left to die. Shashi extorts money from the group as he has cctv footage of them leaving with the girl. When Surjan sees the footage carefully he realizes the girl in it is Rosie and when he drives to the spot of the accident he finds her standing on the road and his car swirls into the sea. He then finds her remains in a spot where they used to sit and talk and gives her a proper funeral. He also comes to terms with the fact that the medium has indeed contacted his son and reading the letters written by their son he cries.

The movie is directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and Aamir Khan. The music is composed by Ram Sampath.
