Rakesh Sharma's son Kapil Sharma never wanted to become an astronaut like his father, but he found it interesting from a young age. He grew up listening to stories about space, rockets, and fighter jets. That's why he may have let his dreams fly differently. Rakesh Sharma's son was into film. Kapil directed the film 'I Me Or Main,' starring John Abraham, Chitrangada Singh, and Prachi Desai. Even though his profession is very different from his father's, the proud son has been very interested in space because of his father.

In a 2011 interview with Rediff.com, Kapil shared some memories of growing up as the son of India's first astronaut. Kapil said that at the age of four to five, he knew what a fighter jet was and how it worked. He also knew what Rakesh Sharma did.

Kapil said, 'Ever since I was 4 or 5 years old, I used to love seeing my father with his helmet and oxygen mask. I would also dress up and wait to go for a walk with my father. When he was going to space, it was like going for a walk in the park'. Kapil further said, 'When my father was taking training for the mission, we were all in Moscow. Even though I didn't understand anything at that time. When my father returned to India, I realized how popular my father was. And I had become a star in school.'

Talking about his love for cinema, Kapil said, 'My father was popular, but I wanted to make this film since childhood. I used to participate in theatre and plays in school and college. I tried to learn about cinema.'
