His acting debut as an actor was in 1996 in the film Aashique Mastane alongside Monica Bedi directed by Ajay Kashyap and Uff! Yeh Mohabbat with Twinkle Khanna directed by Vipin Handa. Both films emerged as critical and were commercial disasters.
He made his directorial debut in the sports drama Aryan in 2006 starring Sohail Khan and Sneha Ullal both in the lead roles. This film also was a commercial disaster.
Abhishek Kapoor’s breakthrough came through the musical drama Rock On in 2008 starring debutants Farhan Akhtar and Prachi Desai alongside Arjun Rampal, all three in the lead roles. Kai Po Che won Abhishek Kapoor the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay and also his second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director.
In 2016 Abhishek Kapoor directed and produced the musical romantic film Fitoor which was an adaptation of Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations of 1861. The film starring Tabu, Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapur had opened up with mixed reviews from the critics but the film had received praises for its soundtrack, cinematography and the production design and for the costumes and performances. However the film had emerged with underwhelming grosser at the box office.
In Rock On 2 the sequel of Rock On directed by Shujaat Saudagar the film had Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, Arjun Rampal reprise their roles from the original films with Shraddha Kapoor and Shashank Arora who appeared in new roles. In 2021 Abhishek had directed the social romantic drama Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor. The film narrative was of a gym trainer who falls in love with a transgender woman. The film reviews had critical acclaim and emerged as moderate and commercial success at the box office. It earned Abhishek Kapoor his second Filmfare Award for the Best Story.
Abhishek’s most recent directorial film was the action-adventure drama, Azaad released in January 2025 starring Ajay Devgn, Diana Penty and Aaman Devgn did his debut in this film alongside Rasha Thadani. He directed the film and also has written and produced this project.
