Shriya Saran who aspired to be an actress made her debut with the Telugu film Ishtam in 2001. While she was in the second year of college in LSR College in Delhi , Shriya was offered to appear in front of the camera for a video shoot. On recommendation from her dance teacher, she was invited for a music video of Renoo Nathan’s Thirakti Kyun Kawa which was shot in Banaras. The video was seen by Ramoji Films who offered her the first lead role in their film Ishtam followed by the film offered to her named Nuvve Nuvve. Her first commercial success was Santosham in 2002, co-starring Nagarjuna, Prabhu Deva, Gracy Singh. She appeared subsequently in many successful Telugu films between 2004 and 2010, such as Nenunnanu, Chatrapathi, alongside of Hindi film, Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003 . She also acted in the film Awarapan in 2007 followed by her debut in Tamil film Enakku 20 Unakku 18 and Shivaji . In 2008 she debuted in an English film, The Other End of the Line. The other projects that followed were Kanthaswamy in Tamil and Pokkiri Raja. Shriya also established herself in Malayalam films as the leading actress .In 2012 Shriya Saran starred in Midnight’s Children an English adaptation of the novel with the same name. She received the international critical acclaim for her role in the film.
Shriya acted in a supporting role in her debut Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003 starring alongside of Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza in the lead roles. In Telugu film she was a part of the film called Tagore which was screened at the International Indian Film Academy Awards.
Shriya had career fluctuations between 2004 and 2007.
Between 2004 Shriya had worked in two Telugu and two Hindi films which included Arjun and Nenunnanu. She appeared opposite Prabhas in her most notable film Charapati. She earned the Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award. She made a comeback with the Tamil film Mazhai, a remake of the Telugu film. The film had flopped. She then appeared in Mogudu Pellam O Dongodu , Bommalata which won Shriya the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. Saran had then appeared in the Tamil Film Thirvilavadal Arambam.
In 2007 Shriya chose to play the lead role opposite Rajnikanth’s in S. Shankar’s Shivaji:The Boss . The role was first offered to Aishwarya Rai who had refused the role due to her busy schedules. The role however, made her the Star of the South Indian film industry. She then appeared in several films such as Deyadasu, Munna and Tulasi.
In 2007 Shriya made her come back in the Hindi film, Awarapan which was a joint production between India and Pakistan. She had to learn Urdu as she essayed the role of a Muslim woman in the film. Saran appeared in one more Tamil films Azhagiya Tamil Magan opposite Vijay. The film was received with mixed reviews . In the same year Shriya made a special appearance in the Kannada film Arasu.
In 2008, Shriya made her debut in American Cinema with Ashok Amritraj’s The Other End of the Line. She acted alongside of JesseMetcalfe, Anupam Kher and Tara Sharma.
She has acted in Casanovva in Malayalam, and her next release was Gali Gali Chor Hai .She was also in the film Life is Beautiful.
Saran has had an illustrious career and further starred in the films such as Pavitra , Chandra and Manam. In 2015 she acted in Drishyam. Between 2017 and 2022, Shriya had acted in Satkarni, RRR, Drishyam 2, both co-starring Ajay Devgn in 2022.
