Awaara is a 1951 love story produced and directed by Raj Kapoor starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis in the lead role, s besides his real-life father Prithviraj Kapoor who plays his father’s role, Leela Chitnis and K. N. Singh.  Shashi Kapoor has a small role of the young Raj Kapoor in the film for a short while.

The film focuses on the lives of the poor Raj (Raj Kapoor) and the rich and privileged Rita(Nargis). Raj Kapoor has been influenced by the character of Charlie Chaplin for this film which was considered as his milestone film in Bollywood and went on to be a history.

Judge Raghunath essayed by Prithviraj Kapoor deserts his wife Leela( Leela Chitnis) when he learns she is pregnant. He suspects the child is not his and that she was raped by Jagga( K. N. Singh) who had briefly abducted her during a robbery. Leela is helpless with the birth of her son and raises him in the slums of Bombay and the mother wants to educate her son to make him a judge like his father.   Jagga still hovering in the background lures Raj to take to small crimes.  Despite the class and the background, he meets a young girl Rita.  They fall in love but circumstances and her family object leading to their separation.   Their struggles with the cast and creed ideology continue and after 12 years Raj and Rita connect again.
