Veteran actor Prem Chopra was famously notorious for his villainous roles that he essayed in the films. The actor recalled it was difficult for him to attend a normal function hosted by family or friends without scaring the female guests who probably took his role of a villain seriously.
Why did Prem Chopra choose to play villainous roles.
Like most actors Prem Chopra also wanted to be a hero and he did play the lead role in few Punjabi movies which did pretty well but when he had played the hero’s role in Hindi films, they were not successful , therefore he switched to character roles and switched to playing villain’s role. He also stated that once your film flops, one doesn’t get many chances in the film industry to be in the lead roles. Thereafter he started getting offers for negative roles which worked like magic. He didn’t have much choice then so continued to do only villainous roles.
Prem Chopra had an image of a bad man !
He was amused that many a times the men hid their wives from me or women at parties or social functions would avoid him !! He would go and talk to them to make them comfortable and ensure he was a regular good guy as any of them and he was only playing his part of the villain in the films and in reality, he was not one !!
People in those times were not as open as they are now with the new generation. The audience started differentiated between the character and the actor’s role. Their perception changed over the years . Earlier it was very difficult for a negative character or villain to switch over to playing the good guy or to be a hero in a film . People did not accept it said the actor.
