After her role as a child artist in Sanskar she appeared in many films like Yasmin, Stree, Vallah Kya Baat Hai, Main Shadi Karne Chala, Dr Vidya, Rustom Kaun and Mujhe Jeene Do.. but most of her roles in this film were insignificant until she got her first role as an adult in 1963 in Gehra Daag. Thereafter she appeared onscreen with Dara Singh in the film Faulad. This heralded the beginning of her career in films and she had finally established herself and did over 115 films. She became a Top heroine for B-grade films between the period 1963 to 1968 and her earnings were 2.5 lakhs per film during that period. Most of her films were paired with Dara Singh. Later in the years between 1963 and 1977 Mumtaz developed her acting skills and experience to do memorable roles in mainstream Bollywood films she is remembered for her roles in ‘Roti’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Sacha Jhutha, ‘Prem Kahani’ ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ ‘Bandhan’ and ‘Do Raaste opposite to Rajesh Khanna the Superstar of that era. She also acted in the award-winning film, ‘ Khilona’ opposite Sanjeev Kumar, ‘ Chor Machaye Shor’ a comedy romantic film with Shashi Kapoor, ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar ‘Loafer’ and ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost’ with Drharmenda.
