Ranjit, played by Akshay Kumar is a wealthy Kuwaiti businessman who lives in a big mansion with his wife Amrita, played by Nimrat Kaur and his daughter Simu. He considers himself to be a total Kuwaiti and has not much regard for his own country India or his people. He is influential and has connections in Baghdad and Kuwait.

 

He gets a call one day informing him that the negotiations between Kuwait and Iraq have not gone through and Iraq might invade Kuwait. He goes to meet the Emir’s place and talks to the Iraqi Republican Guard Officer, Major Khalaf, who offers his friendship but is not of much help. Ranjit then goes to the indian Embassy where he finds the officials have already evacuated the place and the Kuwaiti Government is gone in exile.

 

Ranjit’s mansion gets raided by Iraqi soldiers, but his wife and daughter mange to escape. Now there are 170,000 Indians standed in Kuwait and inspite of his thoughts for his country people he decides to help them. He builds makeshift camps for them providing with food and water. With the help of Joint Secretary from Indian External Affairs Ministry, an Air India flight is finally allotted from Jordon, to take the Indians home.

 

Airlift is directed by Raja Krishna Menon and produced by Nikkhil Advani, Monisha Advani, Aruna Bhatia, Bhushan & Krishan Kumar, Suvidesh Shingade and Vikram Malhotra. The music is composed by Amaal Mallik and Ankit Tiwari.
