Biography
Kabir Bedi began his career in advertising While studying at St. Stephen, Kabir had joined Lintas Advertising agency to earn and learn. His Guru at Lintas was the great English Theatre legend Alyque Padamsee and under him Kabir Bedi did many memorable English plays like William Shakespeare's Othello and Girish Karnad’s most successful play Tughlaq, which was adapted by Alyque Padamsee in English and played brilliantly by Kabir Bedi. Film legend O.P.Ralhan discovered Kabir Bedi The play was a huge success and many top film director and producers used to throng Kabir Bedi’s show Tughlaq and one among them was filmmaker O.P.Ralhan, the filmmaker who made Dharmendra, a star with his film Phool Aur Pather and Rajendra Kumar Mr. Jubilee with his film Talash, India’s First Most Expensive Film! O.P.Ralhan had discovered bold and sexy Zeenat Aman at Miss India contest and was looking for an equally dashing and debonair actor, which he found in Kabir Bedi. Thus O.P.Ralhan launched both Kabir Bedi and Zeenat Aman in his suspense thriller Hulchul (1971). Bollywood ruined the talent of Kabir Bedi In the early 70’s Kabir Bedi had a very poor career. In his 16 years in Bollywood from 1971 to 1987 Kabir Bedi did almost 20 films and just two were hits. The hit films were Kuchhe Dhaage (1973) and Nagin (1976) rest all the films were miserable flops likes Rakhi Aur Hathkadi; Sazaa; Daaku; Bullet; Daku Aur Mahatma; The Thief of Baghdad. Hence dejected Kabir Bedi went to Hollywood. Rakesh Roshan revived Kabir Bedi’s career in Bollywood In the 80’s Rakesh Roshan revived Kabir Bedi’s career by giving him a tailor made role in his film Khoon Bhari Maang. The movie was a hit and opened new doors for Bedi. But Bedi was cautious this time and did only those films that exploited his talent to the hilt. Some of his good roles are in films like Yalgaar, Kshatriya, Main Hoon Na, Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story, Dilwale, Mohenjo Daro
Career & Achievements
Kabir Bedi became immortal with his Hollywood connection When Kabir was struggling with insignificant films in Bollywood he was approached by an Italian filmmaker Sergio Sollima, who was making an Italian TV serial Sandokan for European Television. The serial protagonist Sandokan was an Asian prince-turned-pirate who revolts for the freedom of the country. The director was thus looking for an Indian actor, preferably tall, dashing and with bread. Incidentally Kabir Bedi ’s Kuchhe Dhaage had just released and Bedi was being applauded for his menacing role of a bandit opposite Bollywood star Vinod Khanna . In addition, Kabir Bedi was winning rave reviews in media about his ruthless role of King Tughlaq. Hence Sergio Sollima, had not much problem signing Bedi for his TV serial in lead role because Bedi was fluent in speaking Italian language too and his personality suited Sandokan’s character to a perfect ‘T’! The serial was released on European TV in 1976. It was just a six part serial but it became a huge hit globally and made Kabir Bedi an International star. Soon Kabir Bedi was flooded by many International TV serials like The Bold and the Beautiful, Vivere, Dynasty, Murder, She Wrote, Magnum, P.I., Hunter, Knight Rider and Highlander: The Series etc. Kabir Bedi became a favorite of Hollywood after he appeared in James Bond film Octopussy. His role of villain's henchman Gobinda became quite famous. His other international films include Columbia Pictures' The Beast of War, Andata Ritorno etc. Kabir Bedi thus became immortal thanks to his Hollywood connection; otherwise Bollywood had ruined his career!
