Biography

Dharmendra made his debut with Arjun Hingorani's ' Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960. He had a supporting role in the film Boyfriend in 1961 and was cast as a romantic hero in several films between 1960 to 1967. He had a solo role in the film ' Patthar aur Payel' In his career he played a Romantic hero's role opposite some of the most established heroines of that era. From Nutan to Mala Sinha to Saira Banu to Hema Malini. Patthar Aur Payel became the highest-grossing film of 1966 and Dharmendra received his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor. His performance in the film Anupama was critically acclaimed. Having played two roles with ease that of a romantic hero as well as an action hero. He also did some films with humour and comedy and was called a versatile actor. His two comedy films, namely 'Chupke Chupke'. 'Tum Haseen Main Jawan' and 'Do Chor' His most successful pairing was with Hema Malini who went on to become his wife. The couple acted in several films the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards awarded Sholay the special distinction of Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years. Dharmendra went on to act in several action films between the years 1976 to 1984. He has worked with various directors with a variety of styles in their films, His Longest collaboration was with Director Arjun Hingorani with whom he made his debut and continued to work with him for many more hit films. In 1997, Dharmendra received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. He received this Award from Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu and was emotional during the time of receiving this prestigious award in his speech he mentioned that despite working on over a hundred films many of them being very successful films, he has never won any Filmfare Awards in the Best Actor category and to that Dilip Kumar commented' whenever I get to meet God Almighty I will set before him my complaint. as to why didn't you make me as handsome as Dharmendra !!

Career & Achievements

Dharmendra has received several honours for his contribution to Indian Cinema and was awarded India's third highest Civilian Honour Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2012. He experimented with film production and launched his sons. Sunny Deol in Betaab and Bobby Deol in Barsaat as well as his nephew Abhay Deol in Socha Na Tha. He was the presenter of his films like Kab Kyun Aur Kanah. After taking a back seat in his career he was again seen in the films Life in a Metro in 2007 and Apne both films were critically and commercially successful and his new release was ' Johnny Gaddar' in which he played the role of a villain. In 2011, he starred alongside his sons again in their home production, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. and a sequel was released of the same film in 2013. He appeared with his daughter Esha in his wife Hema Malini's directorial venture, ' Tell Me O Kkhuda in 2012 and 2014 played a double role in the Punjabi film, Double Di Trouble. Dharmendra was active in politics. He was elected as a Member of the Parliament in the 2004 general elections from the Bikaner constituency in Rajasthan for the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.
