"Sanjay Dutt was first seen on the Bollywood screen as a child actor and appeared in the film Reshma Aur Shera in 1972 in which he starred with his father as a Qawali singer. He made his debut in the film Rocky in 1981 and the film was released a few days after his mother had passed away. He did many films thereafter like Vidhaata, Jaan Ki Baazi, Main Awara Hoon, Jeeva, Mera Haque, Imaandaar, Inaam Dus Hazaar, Jeete Hain Shaan Se, Mardon Wali Baat and Ilaaka to name a few. He went on to star in some of the most defining roles like his films Sadak, Saajan and Khalnayak. Three weeks before its release he was arrested for the first time with charges of being involved in the 1993 Mumbai Bombings. Sanjay Dutt has appeared in more than 100 films. He has enjoyed great success as an Actor in genres ranging from Romance to Comedy to Thriller, Action and Drama. Has usually played the roles of Gangsters, Thugs and Police Officers which won him much appreciation. The Media popularly refer to him as the ' Deadly Dutt' for his larger-than-life portrayal in the films. In a film career spanning more than 35 years, Sanjay Dutt has won Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards, Indian Film Awards etc. He has played the lead in four films that won him the National Award. His film Jaan Ki Baazi marked a comeback for Sanjay Dutt and he thereafter did many films in the years that followed which didn't do too well at the Box Office. 1986, He had his first Blockbuster film' Naam ' 1986 which was his first major critical success and a turning point in his career. The film firmly cemented him amongst India's first finest actor in the mainstream leading actor's roles and he earned praises for his performance. In 1989 he acted in the film Hathyar which was also well received by the Critics although both the films did only average collection at the Box office. He was seen in many multi-starrer films thereafter in the late 80's along with actors Govinda, Mithun Chakraborty, Dharmendra, Jackie Shroff and Sunny Deol. His success continued in the 90s with films and he went on to doing films year after year till his first arrest, due to which he was unable to actor the four years due to his subsequent arrests and bail although many incomplete films released featuring Dutt during the time that all sank without a trace of this film. The film, Dushman in 1998, with all the due credit given to his co-star Kajol, was an excellent year for Sanjay Dutt and he considers it truly his comeback year with his five releases thereafter starting with Kartoos, Khoobsurat, Daag - The Fire, Haseena Maan Jaayegi and the award-winning film, Vaastav-The Reality for which he has won awards. As the years rolled by he continued to play lead roles and gained popularity and critical success for his films Jodi No 1, Kaante, Pitaah, and his Award-winning blockbuster Munna Bhai M B B S which garnered him several awards and he continued to play lead roles and was a popular film actor for his films Musafir, Plan, Parineeta, Dus, Shabd, Zinda, he had another blockbuster, a sequel of Munna Bhai M B B S, the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai was released in 2006 for which he has received Award from the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his work in the film. NDTV named him the Indian of the Year. He also sang and danced in a music video by Asha Bhosle called Asha and Friends directed by S. Ramachandran. Although he was going through a successful period professionally and receiving great acclaim for his performance, it coincided with the start of the Mumbai Bombing Trials. The nation became transfixed with his Court proceedings, which found him not guilty of terrorism and related acts but jailed him for short periods on two occasions between 2006=2007. He was granted bail enabling him to complete his films and gain success in his films Dhamaal, Shootout at Lokhandwala, All the Best, Double Dhamaal, and Agneepath for which he won several awards. His last role before his sentence in 2013 was in the film PK as a supporting actor. In January 2008, the Indian Film Institute featured Sanjay Dutt in its Top 100 Highest-Grossing Movies of all times list. In May 2013 edition his name was listed in the 100 Years of Indian Cinema featuring him in the Top 20 list
