“Adipurush” (2023) is an action-based mythological film inspired by the Hindi version of the Hindu - Ramayana. The movie was directed and co-written by Om Raut. T-Series and Retrophiles produced the film. It stars Prabhas as Raghava, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Saif Ali Khan as Ravana, and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman.
The novel traces the narrative of the Ayodhya prince Raghava and his life with his wife Janaki and his brother Shesh living in exile. Peaceful Raghava in the forest becomes disarrayed with the arrival of the great King Ravana from Lanka who has abducted Janaki. Raghava forms alliances with Hanuman and his huge contingent of vanaras in the very hard war of winning over King Ravana along with his armory. The story that follows is an epic journey of duty, courage, and devotion culminating into the legendary war that decides the fate of good versus evil.
“Adipurush” is heavily rooted in the essence of Ramayana, but the execution doesn't work well. This much-awaited movie was released on June 16, 2023, and received mixed to negative reviews. Fans and critics were downhearted because of the bad choreography in the actions, poor dialogue, and unimportant visual effects that contrasted with the original scale of the document. Despite a very strong story line and great performances, it is the mediocre script and not so impressive CGI which have made them talk for most of it and criticized highly.
At the box office, the film opened well but failed to gain momentum, underperforming at the box office. However, for those interested in mythological stories and grand-scale storytelling, it is still a curious watch.
Now, “Adipurush" is streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It is still a mythological tale, though it has flaws.
