Rani has appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melborne and as a part of showcasing Indian culture in the 2010 Common Wealth Games that were held in New Delhi. Rani has done charity appearances for social causes and her Show called the Temptations in 2005 in New Delhi where she performed to raise funds for the National Centre for Promotional of Employment for the Disabled people. Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra were also a part of that promotion . Rani is the only actress who is on the listing of ‘ Ten Most Powerful names of Bollywood’ . Filmfare Magazine incorporated her name in the Power list # 10, wherein she ranked No. 8 position. The actress donated her prize money , her half share of half a million rupees from her appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000 with Preity Zinta to the Holy Family Hospital for the treatment of children with heart problems which she feels is a major set back in India. In February 2005, Rani Mukerji performed at the HELP! To raise money for the victims of Tsunami in collaboration with other Bollywood Stars. In 2012 she is one of the seven time Filmfare Award Winning Indian actress. Rani besides acting is also associated with several other commercial and non-profit organizations. In March 2004 she visted the Sandy dunes of Rajasthan to boost the Morale of the soldiers along with NDTV. Rani Mukerji comes from a film-oriented family and is a Bengali . Her father is a retired director and one of the founders of ‘ Filmalaya Studios’ while her mother was a playback singer. Her brother Raj Mukherjee is a film producer cum director. She is the niece of Debashree Roy a Bengali film actress and is a cousin to Kajol the Bollywood famous actress. At an early age Rani was trained as an Odissi dancer and began learning dance while in school. She studied at the Maneckjee Cooper High school in Juhu and later finished her graduation from Mithibai College in Mumbai.

In 1994, Salim Akhtar a family friend offered her a role in the film ‘ Aa Gale Lag Ja in 1994 but her father turned down the offer for her as he felt she was too young to enter the film industry and she was replaced by Urmila Matondkar. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey of a Woman Following this success she played the leading actress role in the Social film Mehndi in the same year and the comedy film Hello Brother . Both the films were disappointing and failed to give a boost to her career that had kick started with success. Struggles and initial success in her career. By 2000, Mukherjee wanted to stop doing the standard stereo type roles and do more challenging roles than just being the glamorous actress. However none of the films of the kind she wanted to do came her way except the two releases Badal and Bichhoo. Both were male-centric action dramas. She later did a film for Kamal Hassan’s bilingual film Hey Ram which proved rewarding as the film was based on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and the film was selected at the India’s official entry to the Oscars that year which also received wide acclaimed for her role as a Bengali school teacher who is raped and murdered during the communal rights in Calcutta ( Now Kolkotta) She further acted in comedy films like Hadh Kar Di Aapne and the romantic film Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye. In 2001 she did the film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke a film on surrogate childbirth though the audience felt that Preity Zinta’s role was more prominent as the surrogate mother while Rani Mukerji’s potential was not absorbed well by the film maker and did not give her scope to do her best. What followed were her roles in Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai,, Nayak the Real Hero , Mujhse Dosti Karoge! , Saathiya, which was a remake of a Tamil box office film and all these films did good at the Box office and for which she has won the awards for Best Actress and the nominations as well. In 2003 she did a film by Aziz Mirza’s romantic Chalte Chalte and the film was quite similar to her earlier film Saathiya . The film was well received by the critics and her fans. She acted in the romantic film Chori Chori the same year and Calcutta Mail opposite to Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala and J.P. Dutta’s ensemble war film L O C Kargil but none of these films fared well commercially. Her role in Yuva and Veer-Zaara got her the much deserved acclaim and further success . The film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006 was yet another block buster film with multi-star by Yash Raj Films and she acts as a unhappy married woman who falls in love and has an extra marital affair. The Biopic film No One killed Jessica in 2011 proved to be her first box office hit after four years followed by a chain of more successful films in her booty.. which were Talaash and Mardaani in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
