Biography

Hema Malini started her career in flims with her first film in a Tamil film followed by her first Hindi film ' Sapnon Ka Saudagar in 1968. In 1970, she was promoted as the Dream Girl for the film with the same name. She has played both comic and dramatic roles with the same ease. And over the years between 1968 till date has acted in over 150 films. In most of her films she has starred opposite to her husband Dharmendra, and gave some hit films with Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand as well. Hema Malini besides doing the lead roles in some of the most popular Hindi films also did quite a few supporting roles and is remembered for her performance in each of her films. she is a brilliant actress with beauty and grace. In 1970, Hema Malini's career took a leap with her lead role in the film, ' Johny Mera Naam' and ' in 1971, her role as the Young Widow in 'Andaaz' and her comeo and coy in a double role in ' won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award for this film. Within four years of her debut she was an established lead actress in Bollywood and carved her niche as a classical dancer. Many of her films included her dance that kept the audience captivated. Hema Malini was in the films from 1968 to 2000 taking short breaks and long intervals between each film once she had her babies her films took a back seat for a couple of years and concentrated on raising them . She made a comeback with her film ' Baghban in 2003 . She also played a substantial supporting role in the 2004 film Veer-Zaara and took to directing her second feature film, 'Tell me O Khuda' which featured both her husband Dharmendra and her daughter Esha Deol. After her marriage to Dharmendra Hema Malini made films which portrayed her the role as Classical singer and dancers in many of them. She also directed the film ' Dil Aashna Hai with Divya Bharti and Shahrukh Khan in the leading roles . Following this she focused mainly on her dancing and television work.

Career & Achievements

Hema Malini gained popularity as one of the most graceful dancer and for her roles in the Television as well as ad films besides her political career and her work for the social cause. In 1999 she campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate vinod-khanna a former Bollywood Actor in the Lok Sabha. In February 2014, Hema Malini officially joined the BJP. Between the years 2003 to 2009 she served as Member of Parliament to the Upper House of the Rajya Sabha having been nominated by the then President Dr. A. P. Abdul Kalam . In March 2010, Hema Malini was made general secretary of the BJP, and in February 2011, she was recommended by the party general secretary.. In 2014 General Elections for the Lok Sabha, Hema Malini was defeated at the Mathura constitution. Hema Malini is a supporter of the animal rights organization PETA and in 2009, she wrote a letter to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner urging him to ban horse carriages from the Mumbai busy streets and to ban bull fights. Hema Malini had won the title ' PETA Person of the Year as she also believes to be a Vegetarian. Besides her role in Politics , Hema Malini has appeared in television series such as Jai Mata Ki in the year 2000 wherein she plays the role of Goddes Durga. Her other television presence is her appearance in Kamini Damini on SaharaOne and "Noopur" which Hema Malini has directed herself and plays the role of a Bharath Natyam dancer. Hema Malini owned the editorship of the magazine, ' New Woman' a Hindi Women's magazine . In 2000 She was appointed as the first female Chairperson of the National Film Development Corporation for a term of three years. In 2007 Hema Malini entered a promotional contract with KENT RO Systems makers of the mineral water purifier system and she became the brand ambassador for Pothys a textile showroom in Chennai.
